Academic Summer Program
By means of State of Michigan Section 31 Part A grant funds (designed to improve students who have been identified as "at-risk" of academic failure in some way), the Academy for Business & Technology elementary school has been able to offer a free 4-week academic summer program for students who require assistance in reaching grade-level skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Originally planned as a preparation program for students taking the state MEAP assessment in the fall, it has been expanded in recent years to include K-2 students as well; current research indicates that if basic skills are not acquired at the lower levels of elementary, students tend to struggle and have increased difficulty later in elementary & middle school.
The 2011 Academic Summer Program offered a special intensive reading program for a small group of students; this is the second year that such a program was offered. Both parents and students had to agree to specific program requirements in order to participate. |
