Courses
The Kent County Collaborative Core Curriculum (KC4) is used at the academy for coursework in math, English language arts, science and social studies. Employing various learning styles and teaching strategies, the KC4 curriculum provides the foundation for expanded learning opportunities and enables all students to achieve academic success. In addition, a full complement of academic programming including instruction in Arabic language, physical education, health and music are provided.
Foreign Language Instruction
The Academy for Business & Technology elementary school is pleased to offer foreign language study to all students, grades K-5. We have several highly qualified staff members who are bilingual and able to provide foreign language lessons. In the last few years, Arabic has been the language of instruction.
Foreign language instructors also provide additional support to our many English Language Learners (those students whose native language is not English). This additional language support makes it easier for students to become integrated into the school community. The diverse backgrounds of our student population is a large part of what gives our school its unique character.
Music Education
All students K-5 take classes in music one or two times per week. Students are taught the basic aspects of musical performance and showcase their skills and talents in musical programs that are scheduled during the year.
In addition to singing, students in grades 2-5 also receive instruction on the recorder, which is often the student's first (but not the last) exposure to instrumental music. Students learn basic fingering skills as well as how to read musical notation.
Music teaches many different and valued skills, such as cooperation, perseverance, tolerance, dedication and commitment. Research shows that students who are active in music tend to have better school behavior and increased academic success -- these are consequences that make music a valuable component of a well-rounded education!
